Master thesis
In many cases; the thesis will be based on work done by collecting own field data, but it can also be relevant with projects based on laboratory analysis, previous collected data or samples. The research area can be in Norway, including Norwegian continental shelf and coastal areas, Svalbard or abroad. Field work is normally carried out during one season (spring, summer, autumn) and can last for several weeks. Research methods are field mapping and aerial image interpretation, measurements of stratigraphic sequence, core samples, fossil studies, use of microscope for sediments and geophysical measurements (seismics and georadar). One or several topics can be included in the thesis:
- Sedimentpetrographic studies to gain information about the sediments primary composition, provenance and diagenesis.
- Studies of stratigraphic sequence, facies relations and deposit geometry in sediments of Precambrian to Quaternary age, for the purpose to interpret deposit processes, -environment and ¿history.
- Studies of modern deposit environments (for example coast, river, glacier, slide) to gain insight into the relation between deposit process and deposit geometry.
- Studies of Quaternary stratigraphy and ¿land shapes to reconstruct glaciation- and deglaciation history, or variations in sea level, palaeo environment and climate.

Admission to the master's programme in geology requires a bachelor's degree in geology, or another degree following a programme of study of at least three years, or similar education approved in accordance with the Norwegian Universities Act section 3-4. In addition, specialization in geology worth the equivalent of at least 80 ECTS credits is required. Normally, an average mark of C or better is required at the bachelor's degree level or other program for basis of admission.
