Call for abstracts: "Innovating for change in global fisheries governance"

The K. G. Jebsen Centre for the Law of the Sea (JCLOS) is pleased to announce its plans to hold a symposium entitled ‘Innovating for Change in Global Fisheries Governance’. The symposium aims to address the following question: How can international law be used as an innovative mechanism for change in global fisheries governance? We welcome submissions related to this general question, and in particular encourage a focus on one of the following themes:

• the prevention and control of ‘IUU fishing’;
• the promise and limits of unilateral action to generate change;
• the promise and limits of regional or cooperative mechanisms in improving fisheries
  governance; or
• the ways in which states use international courts and tribunals to facilitate change.
  
  

The symposium aims to combine law and policy perspectives from all around the world. It will seek to draw on the expertise and ideas of a variety of contributors, including both early and established scholars and practitioners, to provide the broadest range of insights into these important issues. Early career scholars are in particular encouraged to participate. If you are interested in attending, please send an abstract of your presentation and a short biography (not exceeding 2 pages in total) to Eva van der Marel (eva.v.marel@uit.no). The deadline for submissions is 30 April 2016. We are still exploring the possibilities of having accepted papers published. Further information will follow in due course.

Prospective participants are also encouraged to consider attending the annual JCLOS ‘Centre Days’, which will be organized prior to the symposium (20-22 September 2016). The purpose of Centre Days is to present the JCLOS’s ongoing research to the Scientific Advisory Board, which will assess research output and provide recommendations for coming years. In addition, a number of talks will be organized during those days, which are open to the public. One of the planned events is a workshop on dispute settlement.
