Proof of financial ability (International admissions)

NON Norway, Swiss Confederation, Iceland, Liechtenstein and EU citizens

International applicants from outside the EU/EEA area, who are applying to onsite bachelor's,  master's or short programmes, must document financial ability to cover their own living expenses to be granted a student visa.

If financial ability is not documented, the application for admission will be rejected, regardless of academic qualifications.

Who must document financial ability?
  • International applicants (citizens of countries outside the EU/EEA-area and Switzerland) who do not already have a residence permit in Norway, MUST document proof of financial ability. This also includes UK citizens.

  • Foreign students residing in Norway on Student Visa: Please upload a print out of your financial statement from your local Norwegian bank as proof of financial ability.

  • Foreign applicants residing in Norway on work visa, Protection (Refugee Status), Permanent Residency or long-term Marriage/Family visa: please upload a copy of your Residence Permit as proof of financial ability.

  • Norwegian citizens: you are exempted from documenting proof of financial ability. Please upload a copy of your Norwegian passport as proof of citisenship.

  • ONLY NON-EU/SWISS/ICELANDIC CITIZENS

    NOK 126 357* for the study year 2021-2022

    or its equivalent in foreign currency (for master's, bachelor's & onsite short programmes , i.e. proof of financial ability for at least one academic year (2 academic semesters).

    The amount applicants are currently required to document is to meet the requirement from The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) when applying for a Study Permit (student visa).

     *The required amount is subject to change by April 2021. 

Documentation of financial ability should not be older than three months at the time of the application, and must be uploaded to the ApplicationWeb within the application deadline.

Financial ability can be documented with one of the following documents:

  • Self-funded applicants: Please upload your recent official bank statement/transcript in your name showing possession of the required amount of money.

 

  • Sponsored applicants: If you are sponsored by another person, you must document:

    1- sponsor's guarantee letter (the sponsor must state in the letter that he/she is willing to transfer the equivalent of NOK 126 357 to the student deposit.

    2- sponsor´s recent official bank statement/transcript.

 

  • Applicants with scholarships or student loan: Please upload the official letter confirming that you are eligible for a scholarship/student loan (equivalent of NOK 126 357) from the funding or educational authorities in your home country.

AFTER ADMISSION: The required amount must be transferred within the deadline 1 June to the Student Deposit account. Details regarding this arrangement will be sent to admitted students with their offer of admission. Read more on Student visa deposit for international students.

Applicants from developing countries: In assessing your proof of financial ability, the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) will make reference to your individual circumstances (job, civil status, property ownership and employment history), your economic commitments in your home country, the potential of emigration, the socio-economic condition in your home country to decide whether you should be granted student visa (Study Permit) or not. Therefore, we strongly advice you to upload only genuine and factual proof of financial ability to increase your chance of obtaining a student visa after being offered admission to UiT.

A sponsor is a relative/employer/friend (self-funded applicants) or an organisation (applicants with loan/scholarships from home country) who are willing to finance your living costs during your studies.

Please note that UiT cannot help you find a sponsor or scholarships.

A guarantee from a sponsor is:

  • A letter in which the sponsor states that he/she will guarantee that the required amount of funding (NOK 126 357) will be at the disposal of the student during the whole academic duration in the student deposit account in Norway. The letter should include: sponsor's full name, the applicant's name, sponsor's signature, sponsor's postal address/email address

OR

  • An official and notorized letter from a governmental or private agency confirming that you are eligible for a scholarship/student loan (equivalent of NOK 126 357) from the educational or funding authorities in your home country

    .

The Arctic Student Welfare Organization of Norway, associated with UiT The Arctic University of Norway, has opened a deposit account in Danske Bank for foreign students, where you can deposit the required amount of money. You will have access to your money after arriving in Norway through a Prepaid Card (cash card) until you receive a National Identification Number to open your own Norwegian bank account. The deposit will only be transferred to your Norwegian account or to your cash card.

Student Deposit (after admission): Non-EU/EEA students must transfer their proof of financial ability into the Student Deposit account. Once the deposit is received, a Confirmation of Deposit will be issued to apply for Student Visa (Study Permit).
