English requirements










If you wish to document proof of English proficiency with an English test, the test results must be submitted at the application deadline.

The English test must not be more than 2 years old at the final deadline for admission.

If the test is not submitted by the application deadline, your application will be rejected, regardless of academic qualifications.

 

The test results must be valid on the application deadline.

Higher Education Entrance Qualification (Country List)

The Country (GSU) List specifies whether a proof of English language proficiency is required or exempted. Please check the requirements for your country in the Country List .

  • Applicants from countries marked as "NO" are exempted from the requirement for English test.

  • Applicants from countries marked as "YES": you must document an approved English test to be eligible for admission to apply for master's degree, bachelor's degree and short & online programmes of study.

  • Applicants from countries marked as "YES 1", "YES 2" or "YES 3", please see the Country List .

There are no preparatory courses in English available.

An international student’s English skills must pass the English tests that UiT accepts (information about the required scores can be found in the menus below).

Additional tests due to the Covid-19 situation: For admission to the 2021/2022 school year we will accept the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition. Other additional tests will not be accepted.

  • TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 500 (paper-based)/ 170 (computer-based)/ 60 (Internet-based) . Send the original TOEFL Report to the Institutional code: 0742.

  • IELTS - Academic test: International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) Academic with a minimum of 5.0 points  or higher

  • Pearson PTE Academic test with a minimum score of 51 points    

  • APIEL : Advanced Placement International English Language Examination (APIEL) with a minimum of 3 points

  • MELAB: Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) with a minimum of 85 points

  • University of Cambridge Exams: First Certificate English, Certificate in Advanced English, Certificate of Proficiency in English

  • TOEFL - Official score report: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 580 (paper-based)/ 213 (computer-based)/ 85 (Internet-based) or higher. Send the original TOEFL Report to the Institutional code: 0742.

  • IELTS - Academic test: International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with a minimum of 6.5 points  or higher

  • PTE Academic: Pearson Test of English Academic with a minimum score of 62

  • APIEL: Advanced Placement International English Language Examination (APIEL) with a minimum of 3 points

  • MELAB: Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) with a minimum of 85 points

  • University of Cambridge Exams: Certificate in Advanced English, Certificate of Proficiency in English

Exemptions from English tests

  • Please note that if none of these exemptions apply to you, you must document one of the required English tests listed above.

  • Certain applicants are exempted from the requirement of English test in the country list (GSU-list): 

  • Applicants with higher education from China, Bangladesh, Iran, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Myanmar and Sri Lanka MUST document proof English test regardless of whether the medium of instruction is in English. ONLY applicants who have completed university education where the subject English (for example, a full degree in English language and literature) comprised the main component of the course of study (at least 60 ECTS or its equivalent) can be exempted.

  • Applicants from countries (Ethiopia, Liberia,Namibia & Philippines) marked as "YES 2" in the Country List , and who have obtained a Bachelor's degree from these countries with English as the Language of instruction are exempted from the test.

  • Applicants (Hong Kong, Macao, Namibia & Malaysia) who have passed an A-Level examination in English maybe exempted (marked as "Yes 3" in the country list)

  • European Baccalaureat (EB) diploma: The English Language requirement is satisfied if you have English as "Language 1" or "Language 2".

  • Applicants who have obtained an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma OR IB-Certificate/IB Diploma Programme Course Results with passed 3 subjects at standard level and 3 subjects at higher level OR passed 2 subjects at standard level and 4 subjects at higher level at least 20 points including for Theory of Knoweldge and Extended Essay (should be passed), grades 3 or better in all subjects, and Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) must be fulfilled, can be exempted from the required English test.

  • Applicants who have obtained an IGCSE and International Advcanced Level with at least 3 A levels (provided by Cambridge International Examinations and Edexcel) can be exempted from the requirement of English test.

  • Applicants who have completed bachelor or master's degree where the subject English (for example, a full degree in English language and literature) comprised the main component of the course of study.

  • Applicants who have obtained their upper secondary school diploma from one of these countries: Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Botswana, Canada, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Lesotho, Mauritius, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Lucia, Samoa, Singapore, South Africa, Swaziland, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, UK,  and USA can be exempted from the requirement of English test.

  • Applicants will have proof of sufficient English proficiency if they can document a completed one year of secondary school studies, or in higher education in one of the following English-speaking country Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, UK, and USA provided that the language of instruction is English and the place of instruction must have been in one of these countries.

  • Applicants (only bachelor's and short programmes) who have completed and passed English course (140 hours per year / 5 hours per week) at the Norwegian upper secondary school

  • Applicants who have completed a master’s degree taught in English where English was the language of instruction.
