SusSTEMEd: Center for Sustainable STEM Education
SusSTEMEd aims at placing sustainability at the core of STEM education at UiT.
The Beacon (fyrtårn) project SusSTEMEd will develop a world-class, sustainable curriculum in the chemical sciences and materials that is grounded in a contemporary socio-economic and ecological context, responsive to the jobs market, and attractive to an increasingly diverse Norwegian population. The project originated in UiT's
Inorganic and Materials Chemistry Group
led by
Professor Abhik Ghosh
in cooperation with the organic chemistry, materials science, and geochemistry milieus at UiT. Three work packages are currently in place.
WP1. Curriculum development
(especially related to SDGs 4 and 7): Here we will develop content and methods aimed at making
UN sustainability goals
and
planetary boundaries
a central pillar of our educational offerings.
WP2. Research-based learning (RBL) experiences aimed at greater jobs relevance
(especially related to SDGs 4, 8 and 9): The project will develop laboratory exercises and longer-term RBL experiences (from 10 to 20 stp) involving an expanding range of experimental methods and chemical instrumentation, thereby providing a more jobs-relevant education.
WP3. Diversity and inclusion
(especially related to SDG 5): The project will develop content and strategies to create a curriculum that is attractive to all and in particular welcoming to women, ethnic minorities, and LGBTQ+ and differently abled students.
