The course can be taken as a single course without any prerequisites.

Admission requirements

General university admission certification or recognition of prior learning. External applicants can then apply through the local application portal, using application code 9199.

Course content

The course is structured following the principles of universal design, making it accessible and suitable for students from all backgrounds at UiT and also for incoming exchange students, regardless of their previous experience or academic focus.

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to project management, covering essential concepts and methodologies. Students will explore a range of topics designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective project management.

  • Organizational context: strategy, structure, and stakeholder management
  • Project selection methods
  • Leadership and team building
  • Project planning and scope management
  • Cost estimation and budgeting
  • Project scheduling and resource management

Objectives of the course

The course is designed to equip students with knowledge, skills, and general competence for project management, which will enhance career development, further study, and professional qualifications like the PMP certificate.

Knowledge:

  • Understanding the organizational contexts and differences between leadership and management
  • Understanding different stages of the project life cycle
  • Understanding key project planning activities, including scope management, budgeting, and scheduling
  • Understanding how to crash a project schedule in project implementation
  • Understanding how to use different methods for the control and evaluation of the progress of a project
  • Understanding how to terminate a project and keep the relevant documentation

Skills:

Upon completion of this course, students will be equipped with the following skills:

  • Mastery of essential project management terminology and concepts.
  • Recognition of different organizational structures and their advantages and disadvantages for project management.
  • Application of qualitative and quantitative methods for project management throughout all stages of the project life cycle.
  • Proficiency in risk management, stakeholder management, and cost estimation techniques within project management contexts.
  • Scheduling a project and effectively monitoring and controlling the project development.

General Competence

Project management is a field that necessitates a blend of both technical skills and human skills. Technical skills involve project planning, risk management, and familiarity with project management tools and methodologies. Conversely, human skills are crucial for effectively leading teams, resolving conflicts, and managing stakeholder relationships.

The course will endow students with both technical and human skills to initiate and lead projects in different fields, preparing students for professional roles that require managing complex projects effectively.
