Workshops
On this page you will find information about the content and presenters of the Technical workshops that will be held during the Fall semester of 2025
How to join?
The workshops wil be held as one series and you are encuraged to join every workshop! You can sign up for all of them here: påmelding
The file system and the shell enviorment
In Workshop 1, we aim to even out differences in prior knowledge so that all new students have a basic understanding of their own laptop before they begin coding.
The workshop introduces the file system and the shell environment—two parts of the computer that will be widely used throughout the studies.
The first part covers the file system. How is the file system structured? Where is it located? And most importantly, how do you organize a good file system?
The second part of the workshop focuses on shell environments. Here, we’ll explore how the terminal is connected to the file system and how to use it effectively.
This is an interactive workshop where we will test our knowledge along the way, and we’ll wrap up with a fun group activity.
Please bring your own laptop.
The Presenters
Tiril Lappegård
Tiril Lappegård is 21 years old and comes from Nittedal. She is studying for an Integrated Master's degree in Computer Science at UiT and is currently in her fourth year of the program.

Stine Kristoffersen
Stine Kristoffersen, 21, is currently in her fourth year of the Master's program in Computer Science at UiT

Code design and writing reports
The first part of the workshop will help students learn how to translate their problem-solving approach into code.
It will give them ideas on how to tackle tasks and challenges in development. What is important? How do we figure out what’s important? And most importantly—how do we find the solution?
There will be a mix of practical and theoretical content to allow students to work independently and gain a deeper understanding of the topic.
The second part of the workshop focuses on an introductory course in report writing, source usage, and source criticism in a world shaped by Artificial Intelligence.
It aims to provide a broad understanding of how to write a report and what lecturers and teaching assistants expect when it comes to academic writing. In addition, we will dive into how to use AI in a meaningful and responsible way.

Eskil Bjørnbakk Heines, 24 years old, recently finished his bachelors degree in computer science at UiT. He plans to continue with a Master's in Software Engineering starting in the fall of 2025.

Code development cycle and debugging
In the “Code Development Cycle” workshop, you’ll get an introduction to how to write and run code.
We will go through how to use text editors like VS Code, and show how you can use the terminal locally on your computer to compile programs, inspect results, and run them. We’ll also look at how different types of output files are connected to the code you’ve written.
Please bring your own laptop.
The presenters:
Emilie Steen
Emilie Steen is a computer science student specializing in cybersecurity and is in the fifth year of her studies. Throughout her time at university, she has worked as a mentor for new computer science students and is passionate about making complex problems easy to understand—and making computer science fun.

Siri Møller-Pettersen
Siri Helene Grøttheim Møller-Pettersen is 23 years old and comes from Asker. She is studying for a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science at UiT and is currently in her third year of the program. After completing her Bachelor's she plans to continue with a Master's degree in Computer Science.

Github
The first part of the workshop provides an introduction to version control: What is it? Why is it important? And how can Git and GitHub help manage your code more efficiently? The second part is hands-on. Through guided activities, students will get started using Git and GitHub - learning how to track file changes, manage repositories, and collaborate effectively with others.
Please bring your own laptop.
