Dear Members,

I am pleased to announce the second edition of the award-winning initiative: the NATO STO Women & Girls in Science 2025 (WGS25) challenge. This annual initiative aims to inspire young women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) by providing a platform to share innovative research ideas that impact global security and defence.

While this challenge aims to bring forward experts from the broader S&T ecosystem, engaging academic communities within NATO member countries is vital to ensure the success and diversity of this challenge; we would appreciate your support in spreading the word within national academic networks through your established channels.

Some key details:

- What – The WGS25 challenge, organised by NATO STO in celebration of the UN International Day for Women and Girls in Science, invites women who are university students and young researchers under the age of 35, and nationals of NATO countries to submit visionary research proposals addressing pressing challenges in the field of defence research.

- Why - To highlight the wealth of career opportunities in defence for young women in STEM fields, inspire their pursuit of STEM studies, and contribute to greater diversity in these fields;

- How - Participants are invited to submit research proposals that address one or more of the following NATO S&T priorities: Deterrence, Energy, Climate, Resilience and Space, guided by the following question: What research idea would you like to see NATO pursue over the next five years?;

 When - Beginning on 11 February 2025, the call for proposals will close on 11 March 2025, 23:59 CET. The challenge will conclude with a final event at NATO HQ on 6 June 2025.
