Abstract
Microscopic interpretation of tissues by pathologists is the gold standard for the diagnosis for many diseases. The transition from glass slides to high-resolution digital images will generate tremendous volumes of data and present new opportunities for advancing science and for improving the accuracy and efficiency of pathologic diagnosis. This talk will provide an overview of the challenges and opportunities associated with generating, storing, and computing digital pathology images, and is intended for a general technical audience. I will discuss the data infrastructure needed to work with these data, and describe the challenges in applying machine learning algorithms to gigapixel images, as well as open-source software in this area.

Bio
Lee Cooper, PhD is a Professor of Pathology at Northwestern University where he leads a research lab developing open-source software tools and methods to improve the accuracy and efficiency of pathologic diagnosis, and to improve utilization of pathology data in biomedical research. He received a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2009 and worked at Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology prior to joining Northwestern in 2019. At Northwestern, he leads the computational division in the department of pathology and advises the healthcare system on the implementation of digital imaging in their medical labs.
