About the study Norsk flagg

With a Master's in Electrical Engineering, you'll be at the heart of the electric world's future. Drive sustainability through electrification and digitalization, powered by renewable energy and smart grids. Explore thrilling opportunities in healthcare, transportation, energy, and industry. Join us and be a vital contributor in the renewable energy revolution.

What will you learn?

This master’s programme prepares you to develop the electrical and digital technologies needed for a sustainable future. You will gain advanced knowledge of electric energy conversion, power electronics, electric drives, control engineering and power systems, supported by electromagnetism, programming, measurement systems, signal processing and mathematics. You will learn to analyse electromagnetic fields, simulate power systems, design circuits, programme controllers and integrate renewable energy into smart grids. The programme addresses important applications such as renewable energy generation, energy storage, energy distribution and electric transport, including vehicles, ships and aircraft. You may specialise in the third semester through elective courses or exchange studies. The programme also develops your research, innovation and communication skills, preparing you to complete a master’s thesis and contribute to interdisciplinary, ethical and sustainable energy solutions.

Graduates earn Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (Sivilingeniør).

What can you become?

With a Master in Electrical Engineering, you can work in:

  • Development
  • Construction
  • Research
  • Environmental surveillance
  • Data technology
  • Electrical supply
  • Instrumentation

Employers are often in the supplier industry, power sector and maritime sector, although the education is relevant for most uses of electricity.

With a growing focus on the development of sustainable and renewable energy production, electric energy will play a key role in many new energy-intensive areas of our society.

Access to further studies

The program qualifies students to take a PhD, and UiT campus Narvik can offer such an education through the PhD Programme in Engineering Sciences. PhD at the Department of Electrical Engineering will be affiliated with the research group Electromechanical Systems.

Programme structure

How is the teaching organized?

Courses combine lectures, self-study, assignments and small projects, completed individually or in groups. A 5 ECTS course normally includes about 40 lectures and supervision. Some courses include mandatory assignments or laboratory exercises. Assignments and projects focus on scientific theory, practical application and analysis. Further information is provided in the individual course descriptions.

Digital tools and online resources are used extensively. Course materials, assignments, tests, links, deadlines and other information are available through the Learning Management System (LMS), which is also used for communication with lecturers and fellow students.

Teaching methods vary by subject and may include traditional lectures, project work, flipped classrooms and other active methods. Scheduled hours may also include supervised self-study, laboratory work and assessment tasks. Lecturers and scientific assistants are available for guidance.
