Atmospheric Icing on Structures
About the course
Can be taken as a single course.
Who has to apply for admission?
• PhD students at UiT that wishes to take a PhD level course which is not going to be a part of the PhD degree they study for at UiT.
• PhD students from other institutions than UiT.
• Applicants that has achieved a master’s degree (five year master or three year bachelor degree + two year master degree), but isn’t a PhD student.
This course provides students with knowledge regarding atmospheric ice accretion on structures from meso and micro scale perspectives.
Admission requirements
- This course is aimed at PhD candidates from engineering disciplines, but is open to postdoc fellows if seats are available.
- PhD candidates from both UiT and NORDTEK universities may be admitted to the course. PhD candidates not registered at UiT must upload a document from their university stating that they are registered PhD candidates.
If there are 5 applicants or fewer, the course responsible will evaluate whether the course will take place.
In addition to the general admission requirements for the PhD program at UiT, the candidates should have a prior basic understanding of fluid mechanics & heat transfer and computational fluid dynamics simulations.
Objectives of the course
This course will address the technological knowledge needs related to atmospheric ice accretion on structures and will provide the students with knowledge regarding this field of engineering science from meso and micro scale perspectives.
Upon successful completion of the course, the following learning outcomes are expected to be achieved:
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of structural atmospheric ice accretion physics,
- Modeling of ice accretion on structures,
- Understanding of field meteorological icing events data analysis,
- Understanding of Ice detection and mitigation strategies.
Skills:
- Ice load calculations for safe design of structures,
- Use of advanced research tools related to ice accretion physics
- Designing improved methods to detect & mitigate ice on structures.
Competence:
- Atmospheric ice accretion physics and structural safety under accreted ice loads,
- Using hypothesis testing in scientific research,
- Investigate scientific data.

EnglishSchedule
The schedules are normally finalized and published well in advance of the start of the semester, often a few weeks beforehand. This gives students the opportunity to organize their studies and prepare for upcoming activities.
It is recommended to check the schedule regularly, as changes may occur.
