Storytelling in Audiovisual Media
About the course
Mandatory course in the 1-year Program for Media Studies.
Offered as a single course.
We see and hear audiovisual stories in many places, such as films, series or podcasts—whether they are documentary or fictional stories.
The course is both theoretical and practical and covers the following areas:
- Basic theory of storytelling, style, and genres in various media
- Analysis of narrative form, style, and genre in various media
- Development processes and creative analytical work
Admission requirements
Higher Education Entrance Qualification (generell studiekompetanse) or prior learning and work experience (realkompetanse).
Application code: 9199 - Enkeltemner (ikke realfag), lavere grad (Nordic applicants).
Objectives of the course
After completing the course, the students have the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge
The student has
- basic knowledge of and can describe various forms of expression within audiovisual storytelling and their development throughout history
- knowledge of workflows and methods used in the production of audiovisual storytelling
Skills
The student can
- perform a basic analysis of an audiovisual story’s narrative form, style and genre
- plan and execute the production and post-production of a short audiovisual story in collaboration with others
- reflect on and justify their choices in the production process
General Competence
The student can
- contribute to good production practices through the exchange of viewpoints and experiences.

Credit reduction
If you pass the examination in this course, you will get an reduction in credits (as stated below), if you previously have passed the following courses:
- MDA-1016 AUDIOVISUAL DOCUMENTARY STORYTELLING 5 ects
- MDA-1017 Audiovisual Fictional Storytelling 5 ects
Teaching methods
Intensive session-based with online support (3 on-campus sessions, 1 digital session).
Supervised work with practical exercises, lectures, and seminars/webinars.
Language of instruction and examination
Language of instruction is English.
Work requirements and exams may be done in either English or Norwegian.
Schedule
The schedules are normally finalized and published well in advance of the start of the semester, often a few weeks beforehand. This gives students the opportunity to organize their studies and prepare for upcoming activities.
It is recommended to check the schedule regularly, as changes may occur.
