Introduction to English Word and Sentence Structure
About the course
This course is mandatory for students in the one-year study in English program and the bachelor program in English.
The course may be taken as a single course.
The course offers an introduction to English grammar, with emphasis on word and sentence structure. Word classes and word order, temporality and aspect are standard areas of study. In this regard, the course will also attend to aspects of language acquisition, historical development and geographical and social variation. The course keeps a contrastive Norwegian-English perspective when this is relevant.
Admission requirements
Higher Education Entrance Qualification (generell studiekompetanse) or prior learning and work experience (realkompetanse).
Application code: 9199 - Enkeltemner (ikke realfag), lavere grad (Nordic applicants).
A good command of oral and written English is recommended.
Objectives of the course
The students have the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge
The student has knowledge of/about:
- basic grammatical concepts and terminology
- the grammar of English, with special attention to the structure of words (morphology), phrases and sentences (syntax), plus aspect and temporality- knowledge about word classes, and the different functions that elements belonging to different word classes can fill in the clause
- different types of clauses, and the functions these clauses can fill in a complex sentence
- the valency of common verbs, plus the essential clause elements, and how to identify them (syntactic analysis)
- how to represent the syntactic structure of clauses and sentences in the form of a basic tree diagram.
Skills
The student is able to:
- describe and explain grammatical phenomena using appropriate grammatical terminology
- classify words into word classes based on a given set of criteria
- give a simple morphological analysis of complex words
- give a syntactic analysis of English sentences in terms of clause elements, and ability to recognize that there are different elements (e.g. phrases and clauses) that can fill one and the same clause function, and to represent this in form of a tree diagram
The student has:
- improved their language skills in English.
- developed a vocabulary appropriate to talk about grammatical phenomena.
Credit reduction
If you pass the examination in this course, you will get an reduction in credits (as stated below), if you previously have passed the following courses:
- ENG-1010 Introduction to English Language I 10 ects
- ENG-1010 Introduction to English Grammar I 10 ects
Teaching methods
13 weeks of lectures and seminars (4 hours of teaching per week).
Quality assurance
All courses will be evaluated once during the period of the study program. The board of the program decides which courses will be evaluated by students and teacher each year.

The schedules are normally finalized and published well in advance of the start of the semester, often a few weeks beforehand. This gives students the opportunity to organize their studies and prepare for upcoming activities.
