You are going to the Arctic. Tromsø is located 350 kilometers above the Arctic Circle. Please dress warmly and be prepared for true Arctic winter conditions with a coastal twist. Although Tromsø is located far north at 69° N latitude, its coastal climate is relatively mild for this latitude, thanks to the warming effects of the Gulf Stream. In early March, you should be prepared for a mix of snow, rain, and occasionally windy weather. Conditions can change quickly, sometimes even within the same day. Winter temperatures typically range from 0°C to -10°C, but due to the humidity in the air, it can feel much colder than the actual temperature.
Snow usually covers the ground, and roads and sidewalks can become icy and very slippery. We recommend bringing sturdy winter footwear and wearing layered clothing. You may also want to consider purchasing “isbrodder” (ice cleats that attach to your shoes), which are available in many shops throughout the city center.
As daylight is still limited and evenings remain dark, we recommend wearing reflective accessories (known as "refleks" in Norwegian) for your safety. These are commonly used in Norway during the winter and are widely available in local stores.
Sunglasses might also be useful, as sunlight reflected off the snow can appear much brighter than you might expect.
In Tromsø (and in Norway in general), you can safely drink water straight from the tap. The water is of very high quality and tastes fresh and clean.
The local currency is the Norwegian crown (abbreviated “kr” or “NOK”). But there is normally no need for cash since everything can be paid with credit cards. For most travelers there will be no need to change money.
Please read the “Travel and Accommodation” page on the conference website.
There are a lot of good bus routes that can take you everywhere in Tromsø.
The easiest way to use the buses and pay for the bus tickets is via the local app. Make sure you download the "Svipper" app on your mobile phone. Please see the links on the “Travel and Accommodation” page.
City buses (“Svipper”) 26 and 40 run from the airport to the city center.
To get from the airport to the guesthouse at UiT, take bus 24 to Giæverbukta and change there to bus 33.
UiT The Arctic University of Norway is the only university in Tromsø. To get to its campus (called Breivika) you can take one of the following busses from the city center:
It is possible to connect to wi-fi via eduroam everywhere on the UiT campus. If you do not have eduroam on your devices, you can go to the “Orakelet” office (on the second floor of the Teorifagbygg 2, nearby the Mix-kiosk) and ask them to create a guest-uit account for you.
UiT The Arctic University of Norway is the northernmost university in the world.
The conference will take place at the Breivika Campus - Faculty of Humanities (Fakultet for humaniora, samfunnsvitenskap og lærerutdanning).
We recommend the use of Mazemap on campus: https://link.mazemap.com/mYjEnu5W
We would like to take a group photo of all conference participants. The photo will be taken after Plenary #3 (the talk given by Hans Boas) on Thursday, March 5, at 10:00 a.m. in the same room.
We recently updated the book of abstracts with missing abstracts and added a list of content with clickable page numbers. Download it on the conference website (the Program page or the Book of Abstracts page).
You have several choices: connect your laptop, use a USB key to copy your presentation to the local computer or, as a last resort, send your presentation by email to the chair of your session. For the latter options, please go to the appropriate room before the session starts.
We will take a bus together to the Fjellheisen cable car. Each trip with the cable car accommodates about 20 people.
Once at the mountain top, you can visit the café and the viewpoint to enjoy the stunning scenery. However, please avoid wandering far afield for safety reasons (it can be slippery and icy). Note that it can be windy there, so be sure to have some extra layers especially for your head and hands.
The cost of the whole trip is covered for those who have registered for this trip.
