About the PhD school
The PhD-school has to its disposal a limited number of PhD-scholarships. Positions are on an irregular basis posted under “Positions available”, and highly motivated and well qualified candidates world-wide are very welcomed to apply. Selection of candidates will be based on evaluation by a dedicated committee, and in most cases also on an interview. Candidates that are supported from other sources may also be admitted to the PhD-school, either to work on projects provided by the PhD-school, or, if certain criteria are met, on other PhD-projects (given that proper supervision can be provided by the school).
The PhD-school offers PhD-projects in molecular biomedicine, RNA-biology, marine biotechnology, bacterial genomics, as well as in basic problems in molecular and structural biology:
-
Molecular biomedicine
• Studies of interacting proteins in cellular signaling
• Regulation of transcription factors
• Molecular, genetic and cellular studies of autoimmunity
• Studies of molecular mechanisms of drug function
RNA-biology
• Characterization of structure, function and biological role of catalytic RNA molecules
• Protein-RNA and RNA-RNA interaction studies
• Molecular evolution, phylogenetic distribution, and mobility of catalytic RNA introns
• Application of RNA as molecular research tools
Marine biotechnology
• Molecular basis of cold adaptation
• Molecular basis of virulence – Vibrio salmonicida
• Mitogenomics of marine animals
Basic molecular studies
• Theoretical modelling of reaction mechanisms and ligand binding
• Enzyme design/redesign
• Structural genomics – Vibrio salmonicida
Method development
• Development of bioinformatics tools
Grants for participation at conferences
The PhD-school in Molecular and Structural Biology (MSB) supports the PhD-students enrolled in the school with grants for participation at conferences.
The unambiguous requirements for a grant are that:
1) The PhD student has an oral or a poster presentation
2) The PhD-school is acknowledged i.e. by a note on the poster that you are a student at MSB, or that you introduce your self as a student at MSB on your first slide of an oral presentation.
10 grants of up to 15,000 NOK each will be granted annually. Send a short e-mail application (including a budget) to your supervisor who will forward the e-mail to Renate.Larsen@uit.no with a short note of acceptance of your participation.
