An example of Ocean Protection through Gender Equality: the Co-created student-led project Knots

A group of students in Environmental Law (coordinator: Margherita Poto and students supervisor: Juliana Hayden) at the University of Turin's Department of Georesources and Eco-sustainable Business Management, developed the innovative project, "Knots," which has been featured in a detailed blog post. Knots is a student-led initiative that showcases a unique blend of ocean conservation efforts and the promotion of gender equality within the fishing industry.

The project's cornerstone is an ecotourism-inspired travel guide, which aims to help tourists plan trips that include activities organized by local fisherwomen communities. These activities are designed to be environmentally friendly and less invasive, contributing to the preservation of marine ecosystems. By participating, tourists will directly support the livelihoods of these women and their businesses.

The research methodology behind Knots is as diverse as the project itself, incorporating academic studies, grey literature, and journalistic articles to inform its approach. Recognizing the potential accessibility challenges for some individuals, Knots offers alternative ways to support these communities.

To further the project's reach and facilitate public involvement, a website (https://knots2.webnode.it/) has been launched. Here, interested parties can find more information about the project, upcoming activities, and various ways to contribute to this noble cause.

Knots stands as a testament to the power of interdisciplinary collaboration and the positive impact of integrating environmental sustainability with social equity. The Ocean Incubator Network in cooperation with the University of Turin is excited to support this project and looks forward to seeing its influence ripple across the globe, strengthening ocean protection and gender equality in unison.
