Abstract
The Signal protocol is used daily for private and authenticated communication all over the world. The protocol is used by messaging apps such as Signal, WhatsApp and Messenger to exchange keys, authenticate users and encrypt messages. This talk will look into the cryptographic building blocks of the Signal protocol. Some question that will be covered in the talk is: How is offline key-exchange achieved? How does authenticated encryption work? Against which attack models is the protocol secure?

Bio
Hanna Ek is a second-year PhD student in Cryptography at Chalmers University of Technology and University of Gothenburg. Her research area is provable security and specialized in advanced properties for digital signatures. Two of her main interests are homomorphic signatures and multivariate quadratic signature schemes. Hanna has a Master’s degree in engineering mathematics from Chalmers University of Technology, 2021, and a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Chalmers, 2019.
