    Forskningsinteresser

    Finnes det en drivkraft for dyrelivets evolusjonen som forklarer livets enorme mangfoldet, og kan det også hjelpe oss å forstå den enorme suksessen til parasittiske arter som påvirker oss?

    Et underliggende og viktig trekk som går igjen i begge prosesser er små molekyler kalt mikroRNA. Etter at mikroRNA ble oppdaget for rundt 20 år siden, er de i dag de mest studerte molekylene noensinne, med mer enn 16.000 årlige publikasjoner. MikroRNA finnes i alle dyr og regulerer viktige biologiske prosesser. Deres primære funksjon er å gjøre små finjusteringer av gen-programmer. Imidlertid er mikroRNA-feltet, som følge av den enorme mengden publikasjoner, fullt av motstridende rapporter. Dette hindrer innsikt og forståelse av den underliggende biologien.

    Forskningen til Dr. Bastian Fromm har tidligere adressert dette med mikroRNA-gendatabasen MirGeneDB. Dette  har dermed lagt grunnlaget for å transformere mikroRNA-feltet fra et kvalitativt nivå til et kvantitativt nivå,  noe som gjør det mulig å stille helt nye, grunnleggende spørsmål.

    I dette TFS-prosjektet (MIRevolution) vil Dr. Fromm og hans gruppe bruke nye sekvenseringsmetoder, toppmoderne enkeltcelleeksperimenter. Prosjektet vil dra nytte av det unike biologiske mangfoldet i Tromsø, for å utdype forståelsen av dyre evolusjon, og spesielt parasitter. Ved bruk av mikroRNA vil viktige spørsmål innen systematikk og genregulering bli behandlet. Fromm Gruppen vil videre samarbeide med det ancient DNA-laboratoriet ved museet og museets samling. Dette tilrettelegger for å bruke mikroRNA i det helt nye forskningsfeltet paleotranscriptomics, som for første gang muliggjør genekspresjons studier i lenge dødt biologisk materiale.
