Om emnet

Kan ikke tas som enkeltemne. Begrenset antall plasser, forbeholdt studenter på 5. semester i bachelor i geologi.

The field course provides theoretical and practical knowledge in geological bedrock mapping (igneous and sedimentary rocks including their metamorphic equivalents). The course is an ideal preparation for field-based MSc studies of Solid Earth topics. Students will learn about topographic maps, methods in geological mapping, rock type identification and description in the field, and structural measurements using compass and stereo grid. Special emphasis is laid on the mapping of lithological units, geological contacts and geological structures. Other topics covered are folds, faults including thrusts, ductile shear zones, kinematic indicators, fault rocks (mylonite and cataclasite), and metamorphism. Students will also be introduced to the preparation of geological profiles, digitisation of their geological map using GIS software, as well as geological report writing.

The field course will take place in the Alta area, Finnmark. In this area, the students will map and interpret a well-exposed bedrock section that comprises: (1) ca. 2.1 Ga old Paleoproterozoic volcanic and sedimentary basement rocks, (2) para-autochthonous 1.0-0.5 Ga old Neoproterozoic sedimentary rocks, and (3) Neoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks that are part of a Caledonian nappe complex.

Hva lærer du

What do you learn?

Knowledge

The student has

  • basic knowledge of how to use topographic and bedrock geological maps to navigate in and reconstruct the evolution of an area in deep time
  • knowledge of the basic geological mapping techniques
  • knowledge of lithological units (macroscopic mineral and rock identification), geological contacts and structures such as folds and faults

Skills

The student can

  • plan and carry out bedrock mapping anywhere in the world
  • compile own observations in a bedrock map and construct geological profiles
  • identify and map lithological units, folds, faults, ductile shear zones etc.
  • carry out compass measurements of planar and linear structures, and visualize such data in a stereo grid (analog and digital)
  • identify and use kinematic indicators to interpret fault movements
  • identify the metamorphic grade of lithological units in the field to reconstruct the tectonic evolution of an area
  • use GIS software to bring a traditional field map into a georeferenced digital format

General competence

The student has

  • insight into how to plan and carry out bedrock geological mapping
  • ability to carry out basic tasks within a geological mapping project
  • comprehension of the subject's most important literature and methods
  • ability to communicate and discuss the results from the bedrock geological mapping exercise in a professional manner
  • ability to write a scientific report on the field work
