About the course

The course Sustainable Business in the Arctic provides an overarching introduction to sustainable business in Arctic regions, with particular emphasis on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Through three modules - (1) Understanding Arctic Business Context, (2) Developing Sustainable Business Models and (3) Leading Sustainable Business Transformation - students explore how businesses can understand and respond to challenges and opportunities in a changing Arctic context.

Drawing on real-life examples and cases from Arctic SMEs, the course introduces key perspectives on sustainable business models, value creation and organisational change. Students will develop an understanding of how businesses can address sustainability challenges through the ways in which they create, deliver and capture value, and will gain knowledge of central tools for analysing, developing and implementing transitions towards more sustainable business practices.

The objective of the course is to strengthen students’ readiness to promote sustainable business and organizational renewal in the northern environment.

Key themes in Module 1 include understanding the Arctic context, drivers of change, the characteristics of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the conditions that enable a sustainability focus in small businesses, and the role of networks and collaboration.
