HEL-3053 Health promotion and disease prevention - 10 ECTS

Type of course

The course can be taken as a singular course by applicants who meet the academic admission criteria for the Master's programme in Public Health.

Course content

This course will equip students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to perform a career in the field of health promotion and disease prevention. Students will gain in-depth understanding of the principles, strategies, and frameworks essential for health promotion and disease prevention across diverse populations and contexts.

Objectives of the course

After completing the course, the students should:

Knowledge

  • Have advanced knowledge in health promotion and disease prevention theories and strategies
  • Have advanced understanding of the social determinants of health in health promotion
  • Have advanced knowledge about intervention strategies, implementation, and evaluation methods
  • Have advanced knowledge of ethical theories/models and cultural sensitivity in planning and implementing health promotion strategies
  • Have advanced understanding of systemic factors influencing health promotion
  • Have advanced knowledge of sustainable practices in health promotion
  • Have advanced knowledge of health policies at different levels
  • Have advanced knowledge on how to create supportive environments

Skill

  • Design and evaluate interventions for health promotion and disease prevention in local, regional, and global context
  • Analyze challenges and develop ethically sound and culturally responsive strategies for health promotion and disease prevention
  • Promote evidence-based recommendations for policy improvements in health promotion

General competence

  • Apply theories and strategies in health promotion and disease prevention in different contexts
  • Integrate ethical principles and cultural sensitivity into health promotion
  • Analyze health determinants and address complex system factors affecting health
  • Be able to identify challenges in health promotion, considering ethical and cultural diversity
  • Advocate and communicate health messages effectively to diverse audiences

Master's students studying public health from EUGLOH partner institutions, as well as those from institutions with an Erasmus or North2North agreement, are encouraged to attend this course.

Re-sit examination

Students who do not pass the previous ordinary examination can gain access to a re-sit examination.: The students will be offered to re-submit the parts of the portfolio that has not been approved.
