Research Project M-IN (Exchange students)
About the course
The course can only be taken by incoming exchange students who will perform research projects in Industrial Engineering. The course can be taken as a single course.
The course is for incoming exchange students who will perform research projects at Industrial Engineering of UiT The Arctic University of Norway. The total allocated time for the research project is limited to 12-week full-time work. A workload of 37,5 hours per week per student is expected, which means a total workload of 450 hours per student throughout the entire project period. Some education modules from other existing courses may be included in this course.
During the project period, the students will learn how to perform the literature review for a specific subject area and how to perform an independent research project with the guidance of the faculties. The topic of the research project will be related to one or more subject areas of Industrial Engineering including:
1, Advanced manufacturing systems and robotics
2, Logistics, supply chain management, and operations management
3, Quality management and project management
Objectives of the course
Objectives of the course
Knowledge:
- Concept and general techniques to perform a literature review of a specific domain
- Research design and project management to solve a specific research problem
- Scientific writing
Skills:
- Identify the current research gaps in a specific domain
- Develop and lead a research project to solve the existing problems and provide new solutions
- Skills related to a specific subject of Industrial Engineering

Teaching methods
The scientific staff will initiate the work through suggestions of possible topics. The students are also strongly encouraged to suggest topics of their own interests and discuss possible alternatives with the relevant professors. The topics need to relate to one or more of the subjects in the field of Industrial Engineering.
Each student (or student group) will have one or more supervisors throughout the total working period, but once the project assignment is given, the students are responsible to manage the project themselves. During the 12-week study period, the student needs to complete the tasks defined in the project assignment and deliver a research report.
