The 31st EU–US Transport Task Force Workshop will bring together leading researchers from Europe, the United States and the international fusion community to discuss recent advances in plasma transport physics.
Hosted by UiT The Arctic University of Norway, the workshop will take place in Tromsø from 7–10 September 2027.
The ultimate goal of the EU-US Transport Task Force (TTF) is to develop a physics-based understanding of particle, momentum, and heat transport in magnetic fusion devices. This understanding must be of sufficient depth as to allow the development of predictive models that can be validated against experiment and used to simulate the future performance of burning plasmas in ITER and next-step fusion energy reactors.
The topics covered at the TTF address all aspects of transport in tokamaks and stellarators, including but not limited to:
physics of burning plasmas
isotope effects
fast particle physics
core, edge, SOL, divertor transport and core-to-edge integration
ELM-free and small-ELM regimes
impurity transport
shaping and 3D effects
developments in theory, modelling and measurements
The European TTF continues to act as a framework for topical discussions on transport, and provides the natural connection with the US TTF and the Asia-Pacific Transport Working Group. This conference aims to strengthen collaboration and communication within the transport community, particularly between experimental and theoretical experts, scientists who focus on different regions within fusion plasmas, and between the tokamak, reversed field pinch, and stellarator communities. To this end, having ample time for questions and answers as well as dedicated discussion time are at the core of the European TTF meeting. Moreover, the European TTF is committed to fostering the education and careers of young fusion scientists. For this reason, contributions from PhD students and post docs are particularly welcome.
The 31st EU–US Transport Task Force Workshop marks three decades of international collaboration on plasma transport physics.
Over the years, the TTF has provided a forum for close interaction between experimental, theoretical and computational research communities, helping to identify key challenges and advances in our understanding of transport in magnetically confined plasmas.
The 2027 workshop in Tromsø will continue this tradition while looking ahead to the transport challenges posed by next-generation and burning-plasma experiments.
The workshop is hosted by UiT's fusion research community in Tromsø. UiT researchers contribute to international fusion research in plasma transport, turbulence, fluctuations and computational plasma physics, with particular expertise in transport processes at the plasma boundary.
