CRAFT & ENCODE present: Alphaville (1965)

 Almost 60 years after its first screening, ENCODE and CRAFT bring to you once again Jean-Luc Godard's sci-fi noir movie Alphaville (France 1965). Mixing genre elements from dystopian science fiction and classic film noir, Godard leads the viewer into a totalitarian society dominated by the strict logics and purely instrumental rationality of an overempowered AI – the supercomputer Alpha 60 created by Alphaville's founder Professor von Braun.

Secret agent Lemmy Caution is sent to Alphaville from what is called the Outlands with the threefold mission of finding a missing colleague, killing von Braun, and destroying the supercomputer that upholds a totalitarian rule in the city where any expression of emotion is punishable by death. Equipped with the genre's unavoidable trench coat, hat, and hand gun, Caution embarks on his dangerous quest where eventually not only the fate of a city and its inhabitants is at stake but also the love and life of a mysterious woman. The film was shot in the streets of 1960s Paris with modernist architecture dominating the presented imagery and providing an estranging retro-futuristic look to the dystopian noir story.

After the screening Zoheb Mashiur (CRAFT) and Holger Pötzsch (ENCODE) will lead a discussion and q/a session.

The screening of Alphaville is the 8th in a series of films on autonomous technologies,  AI, and human-machine relations presented by CRAFT and ENCODE in cooperation with Verdensteatret Cinematek.
