I forbindelse med samisk uke 2018 og som en del av universitetets 50 års jubileum, inviterer UiT Norges arktiske universitetet ved Senter for samiske studier og Fakultetet for humaniora, samfunnsvitenskap og lærerutdanning til jubileumsseminar torsdag 8. februar 2018. Med det vil vi markere at Sametingets første president og æresdoktor ved UiT, professor Ole Henrik Magga fylte 70 år 12. august 2017.
Seminaret setter fokus på Samerettsutvalgets arbeid særlig på artikkel 27 i FNs konvensjon om sivile og politiske rettigheter, 1980-tallets viktige og grunnleggende samepolitiske utvikling. Det handler om samisk språk- og kulturarbeid og språkrettigheter, de samiske hovedorganisasjonene i førersetet før institusjonenes inntog, og om de lange linjer i reindriftslovgivningen. Linjer trekkes til dagens sentrale debatter om samiske sivilsamfunn, folkerettslig utvikling, internasjonale urfolksforhold og samisk institusjonsbygging herunder innen forsknings- og høyere utdanning. Det er i år 30 år siden Stortinget vedtok sameloven, og seminaret tar opp sentrale politiske tema i Sametingets arbeid som fiskeri-, mineral- og språkpolitikk, med konsultasjonene som en mekanisme for innflytelse.

UiT’s Anniversary Seminar in Honor of Ole Henrik Magga
We invite everyone to an open anniversary seminar in Tromsø on Thursday, 8 February to celebrate the 70th birthday of Ole Henrik Magga, the Sami Parliament’s first president and honorary doctor at UiT. The program is finalized, and everyone is welcome!

On the occasion of Sami Week 2018, which coincides with the celebration of the university’s 50th anniversary, the Center for Sami Studies in the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education invites one and all to an anniversary seminar on Thursday, 8 February 2018. The seminar is in honor of the Sami Parliament’s first president and honorary doctor at UiT, Professor Ole Henrik Magga, who celebrated his 70th birthday on August 12, 2017.
The seminar focuses on the Sami Rights Commission's work related to article 27 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights that was fundamental to the development of the Sami People’s political rights during the 1980s. The seminar will address a range of topics including the Sami language and cultural work, language rights, and long-term political strategies for reindeer husbandry . Furthermore, the seminar will link these topics to the current debates on Sami civil society, the development of international law, the state of the worlds indigenous people, and the creation of Sami institutions of research and higher education. It is now 30 years since Stortinget (the National Assembly of Norway) passed the Sami Act and the seminar addresses the Sami Parliament’s work with relevant issues regarding fisheries-, mineral and language policies.
