Making Sense of the Aurora: Historical Studies of the Northern Lights in Scientific & Cultural-Political Contexts
Northern lights are a significant factor in the identity and tourist industry of the North Calotte region as a whole. Northern lights research was an area of commitment for research fields in this part of the country long before the existence of the University of Tromsø, and the same remains true today. “Making Sense of the Aurora” aims to build competence at the University of Tromsø in relation to the history of northern lights research, from a Nordic and international perspective. The project is interdisciplinary, involving researchers with backgrounds in History of Science, Literary and Cultural Studies, and Geophysics.
