Leveraging AIS Data and Field Knowledge for Making Spray Icing Risk-Informed Decisions (SPRISK)

This project develops a risk-informed decision-making (RIDM) framework with regards to the sea-spray icing risks associated with navigation and vessel operations in the Norwegian Arctic waters. Such a RIDM framework will be developed by integrating operational knowledge of seafarers into the machine-learning-based models built by utilizing Automatic Identification System data (AIS) data from fishing vessels in the Barents Sea over recent years and large time series of atmospheric and meteorological parameters.

This project contributes to the strategies set in White Paper Meld. St. 9 (2020-2021) The Norwegian Government’s Arctic Policy [1] , by contributing to building competence in the field of safe navigation in the Arctic waters. It supports Tromsø and Finnmark Regional Plan for Climate Change [Regional plan for klimaomstilling], where it helps the inhabitants and society better understand the climate risk in the Norwegian Arctic waters. It also contributes to Long-Term Development Goals of Troms and Finnmark county [2], and Goal Area 3 – [Målområde 3 – verdiskaping og kompetanse] of Nordland County’s regional plan [Fylkesplan for Nordland 2013-2025 [3]] by generating knowledge and building competence through effective partnership, as stated above.

The project started on 01 April 2022 and lasts until 31 January 2026.
