Advancing Knowledge of Methane in the Arctic

AKMA

INTPART-AKMA project was funded by Norwegian Research Council (Project number 287869) and led by the UiT - The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø in collaboration with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in the USA.

As things progressed, we also expanded to include scientists and educators across the world, from South America, Central Asia, Africa and Europe. 

Our aim is to advance collective knowledge about methane activity in the seabed, on the seafloor and in the ocean in Arctic regions. The Arctic regions are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate changes, and methane is a highly effective climate changing gas when it reaches the atmosphere.

WE WANT TO INSPIRE BOTH CURRENT AND FUTURE SCIENTISTS WITH OUR WORK IN ARCTIC REGIONS.

                                   
 
 
 

THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF AKMA are to develop a long term, multidisciplinary education and research collaboration focused on Arctic Methane sources, processes, ecosystems and geological history to provide exceptional training for the next generation of experts in Arctic marine sciences and greenhouse gas phenomena.

TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, 

1. Scientific and technical exchanges between partners and students are arrange.

2. Dedicated research expeditions on the Research Vessel Kronprins Haakon focussed on student training in research methods, data acquisition and analysis.

3. Intensive courses in Arctic cold microbe biogeochemistry and related phenomena will be held at the UiT - The Arctic University of Norway in Troms.

4. Webinars and blogs pertaining to the scientific topics will be available to students for further research.
