To Japan to discuss Norwegian–Japanese AI collaborations

Professor and AI expert Robert Jenssen is attending the Japan-Norway AI Innovation Forum and Japan-Norway Research Symposium, two high-level meetings with Norwegian and Japanese government leaders, business actors and researchers.

Each of the meetings take place in Tokyo, Japan on June 2nd and 4th respectively, and gathers leaders from the Norwegian and Japanese governments, business and academia to discuss how these nations can strengthen existing and future collaborations on artificial intelligence (AI) research and innovation.

The meetings are organized as part of H.R.H. Crown Prince Haakon's visit to Japan from June 1st to 4th. The visit's purpose is to follow up on the nations' strategic partnership in foreign policy and defense, business, and research.

Crucial for global security and well-being

Professor Robert Jenssen is an AI expert and heads SFI Visual Intelligence. He is attending both meetings together with Minister of Digitalization and Public Governance, Karianne Tung, high-profile AI researchers from Norway, and representatives from the Research Council of Norway.

"I am looking forward to discuss the path forward for the Norwegian–Japanese AI collaborations, both for research and innovation in the field," Jenssen says.

Japan is described as an industrial powerhouse, and Norway a leading digital nation. It is therefore of great importance that like-minded countries like Norway and Japan collaborate on future AI development, both in a national and international context.

"These collaborations are crucial for Arctic and global security and competitiveness, as well as safety and well-being for the world community," Jenssen adds.

Will showcase Norwegian top research

The meetings will be used to present ongoing AI collaborations and potential areas for future research collaborations, and are primarily targeted towards AI users and decision makers.

Jenssen and the research delegation will also showcase Norwegian AI research environments, including Visual Intelligence and UiT's new strategic initative, the Arctic Institute for AI in Science and Innovation: a new AI centre which gathers the university's AI research across faculties and departments.

About SFI Visual Intelligence

  • A centre for research-based innovation (SFI) that aims to devlop new deep learning methods for extracting important information from different and complex image data.

  • The centre aims to develop better AI tools, for example to detect heart diseases and cancers, surveil and detect natural resources, and monitoring the environment, climate, and potential natural disasters.

  • The centre has an interdisciplinary approach. Methodologies developed for a particular research area can be often be applied to other disciplinary areas.

  • The centre's research partners are UiT – The Arctic University of Norway, the University of Oslo, and the Norwegian Computing Center.

  • The centre also consists of a consortium of user partners, such as the University Hospital of Northern Norway, the Cancer Registry of Norway, Equinor, Institute of Marine Research, GE Vingmed Ultrasound, Kongsberg Satellite Services, and Aker BP.

  • Visual Intelligence is one of two SFI centres at UiT. The other one is Dsolve.

  • The centre is funded by the Research Council of Norway (grant number 309439) and the consortium partners.
