RESULT welcomes supervisors at UiT to this exciting workshop, which addresses a central topic that all supervisors need to relate to – even if you are pessimistic or optimistic about the introduction of AI in higher education.

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to transform academia, it offers both opportunities to enhance work-life balance through streamlined tasks and improved time management, while also automating repetitive tasks and enriching student learning experiences. However, the integration of AI also raises concerns about increased productivity expectations, job security, and blurred boundaries between work and personal life, which may heighten stress and burnout. The integration of AI also challenges the roles and responsibilities of supervisors. This workshop aims to equip supervisors with strategies to effectively navigate and reflect on both the challenges and the opportunities, ensuring a balanced approach to leveraging AI's benefits against its challenges. Join us to explore the multifaceted impact of AI on academic work-life balance and participate in a scholarly discussion about the well-being, productivity, and roles and responsibilities of our academic community, as well as those of our supervisors. We are fortunate to have Marko Lukic, the leader of UiT’s AI team, discuss this important topic.

The structure of the workshops:

09.00      Informal coffee chat before the start, if you wish (log in and bring coffee/tea)

09.15     Welcome

09.20     Introduction: How generative AI could change the work life of a PhD student and what are the consequences for supervisors – a presentation by Marko Lukic, leader of UiT’s AI-team

09.50     Get coffee

10.00     Plenary discussion and exchange of experiences.

10.40-10.45 Summary/ wrap-up!

Preparations for the workshop:

Please familiarise yourself with:

Reflect on three questions:

Opportunities and risks: Where do you encounter AI in supervision, and what is one valuable opportunity and one important concern?

Boundaries and responsibility: What uses are appropriate, questionable or unacceptable in literature work, writing, coding, analysis and feedback? What should candidates verify and disclose?

Learning and independence: How can AI support candidates’ learning without replacing the critical thinking and research competence they need to develop?

Bring one anonymised example or dilemma for discussion.

Welcome!
