Narvik inspires!

The city of Narvik, located in Northern Norway, is located in the middle of steep mountains and deep fjords. Being above the Arctic circle, it enjoys the Midnight Sun from late May to mid July. The town of Narvik is also known for being the ice free port for the Kiruna and Malmberget iron mines, to which it is connected by a railway. It is also home to a campus of UiT The Arctic University of Norway that focuses on engineering, nursing, economics, and management studies.

Getting to Narvik

Narvik is served by the Harstad/Narvik Airport, Evenes which is located 57 kilometres (35 mi) by road from Narvik and has regular flights to Oslo, Trondheim, Bodø, Tromsø and Andenes.

Before you travel. Since the connections between the Evenes airport and Narvik can be a little spotty, we recommend checking looking at shuttle and bus schedules already before you starting your trip.

Airport shuttle. The airport shuttle FB82 is operated by Nor-Way; it costs around 340 NOK and the travel time is about 75 minutes. Evenes Airport serves Evenes, Harstad and Narvik cities, so you need to identify the Narvik shuttle. You must pay by card; they do not accept cash.

The shuttle makes a stop in front of the Scandic Hotel. For the Quality Hotel, you can stop at Scandic, and then the hotel is a 2-3 minute walk down the street Kongens gate. For other destinations, please use Google Maps or similar apps to find your way.

Regular bus. Buses 200 and 300 also connect the airport to the city and they cost only 66 NOK, but they run much less often. The easiest and cheapest way to buy a ticket is through the Reis App, which accepts cards. They do not accept cash.

If you take the bus, and you are staying at the Quality or Scandic Hotels, you should stop at station Bromsgård. Then head south directly down Kongens gate (the main street where you just got off the bus). You will be walking 7-8 minutes with the fjord/rail yard side on your right and the hillside on your left. It is a completely flat, straight shot down the sidewalk for about 650 meters. For other destinations, please use Google Maps or similar apps to find your way.

Taxi. Taxis are always available and the trip between Narvik and the airport costs around 1500-2000 NOK. It is better to book them in advance using Taxifix or 07550. Please be prepared to pay by card, as cash is seldom accepted.

Getting to the University

Narvik is relatively small, so you can use Google Maps or a similar app to orient you if you would like to move around on foot.

If you prefer to leverage the city's public transportation, we recommend buying a 7-day bus pass using the Reis App, which gives you the lowest price available for all public transportation tickets. The app can also help you plan your trips within Narvik as it has a module that works like Google Maps.

  • From the Quality Hotel to the university by bus: You can take bus number 2 from busstop Bromsgård to busstop Universitet (5 minutes). The bus comes every 30 minutes.
  • From Scandic Hotel to the university by bus: Walk to the center, then take bus number 2 from busstop Rådhuset to busstop Universitet (5 minutes). The bus comes every 30 minutes. Walking takes about 20 minutes.

Restaurants

While all lunches Monday-Friday will be served at the university canteen for conference participants, we leave here some suggestions of other places that may be helpful for example for dinner:

  • Arilds Grillbar. No-frills local greasy spoon (burgers, fries, heavy pizzas). The ultimate late-night fallback option in Narvik. Open until 11:00 PM on weeknights and until 4:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Fiskekroken Narvik. Narvik’s premier destination for seafood lovers. Renowned for its exceptional quality, this spot serves up the freshest, highest-grade local fish in a welcoming atmosphere. A must-visit for an authentic taste of the region.
  • Fu Lam China. Classic westernized Chinese comfort food. Fast service, massive portions, and reliable if you need a quick seat or takeout late in the evening.
  • La Dolce Vita. A cozy Italian restaurant and bar perfect for an early dinner or a relaxing afternoon drink. Drop by for authentic Italian cuisine and casual drinks—open until 6:00 PM.
  • Linken Restaurant & Bar. Upscale panoramic sky bar offering Arctic-inspired small plates and craft cocktails. Located right on the top floor of the Quality Hotel. The kitchen closes at 10:00 PM, but the venue stays open as a cocktail bar until 11:00 PM (weeknights) or 1:00 AM (Friday/Saturday)—perfect for evening networking with a view. This is also the venue for our conference dinner.
  • Milano Narvik. Casual pizza, pasta, and kebab hybrid. Affordable, large portions, and open daily until 10:30 PM. Great for a quick, casual bite after evening sessions.
  • Peppes Pizza. Popular Norwegian American-style pan pizza chain. Located steps from the Quality Hotel entrance. Highly consistent, spacious enough for larger groups, and open until 10:00 PM or later.
  • Yuuka Yuuka Sushi. Fresh, compact sushi and maki spot. Right down the block from the Quality hotel. Seating is very limited, making it an excellent high-quality takeout option if you prefer to eat back in your room.

Weather

During the time of the conference, we expect the temperature to oscillate between 12 and 20 Celsius (between 54 and 68 Fahrenheit), with partly-cloudy skies and possibly some light rain from time to time. We suggest bringing a light jacket.
