Storytelling on the Ocean

Coordinators: Margherita Paola Poto, Giuliana Panieri, Emily Murray, Laura Vita & Valentina Russo

Location: Formidling or alternatively Skolelaboratoriet in Realfagbygget

Description of activity & learning objective: Based on the stories shared and the activities developed in the first part of the session, the pupils are expected to create their own story on how to protect the Ocean. The pupils will work in small groups and create their stories based on the question, "how can we use our emotions, creativity and imagination to protect the Ocean?". Characters of the story are expected to be human and non-human beings (sea creatures, foraminifera, and the Ocean itself). Pupils will learn to bring their creativity and imagination into the world of research and find sustainable, caring solutions to environmental challenges.

Resources: the Ocean Senses Handbook (Panieri G. et al), A Story About Knowledge (with props and touch book) and Follow Your Heart: the school for multipotentialites (Murray, Russo, Poto). The stories can be developed through narratives, art, drawing, sculpting, stitching and music/songwriting.

Expected number of pupils: 15-20 (ideally, one class)

Level: 10-12 years old

Time and length of the activity: one hour for each activity structured

  • 20 minutes for storytelling (FYH, A Story About Knowledge, Stories from the Ocean, Becoming the Ocean)
  • 30 minutes for developing your own story
  • 30 minutes for developing your own story

Guidance/Prompts:

Think about the animals in A Story About Knowledge and Cora and how these characters work together and think outside the box to find solutions to their big questions

The Ocean is a very important part of our lives, even if we cannot see it. There are many different ways to protect the ocean, what is the best way?

Our Emotions help us connect to each other and the planet, and they allow us to communicate and feel. Talk about emotions in your story!
