Engineering Design - Master
Ingeniørdesign, sivilingeniør - master- Nordic applicants: 15 April
- EU/EEA + Swiss applicants: 1 March
- Non-EU/EEA applicants: 15 November
About the study
Product Design and Computational Technology focuses on the design and development of products and structures. The program emphasizes a strong understanding of the principles behind design and redesign processes - equipping students with the tools to create innovative and efficient solutions.
What will you learn?
The programme combines engineering science, product design, and computational technology to address challenges in geometry, dynamics, materials, and structural design. You will study form development, aesthetics, design processes, structural analysis, material selection, and computer-based modeling and simulation.
The program focuses on designing products that withstand real-world demands, including extreme temperatures, heavy loads, radiation, friction, repeated use, and Arctic conditions. You will learn to balance requirements such as low weight, high stiffness, cost-efficiency, sustainability, and soundproofing.
Through applied mathematics, engineering theory, and project work, you will design, calculate, model, simulate, redesign, and prototype products. Topics include composites, advanced materials, structural systems, and modern manufacturing methods such as 3D printing.
Graduates earn Master of Science in Engineering Design (Sivilingeniør) with strong theoretical and practical skills for technological innovation.
You can find more information in the current study plan.

Access to further studies
The Master’s degree (Sivilingeniør) qualifies you for admission to PhD programs.Programme structure
How is the teaching organized?
This is a 2-year full-time study program offered at Campus Narvik, with a possible three- or four-year arrangement. The study can also be followed digitally outside Campus. The master’s programme is flexible and can be taken part-time, making it well suited for combining studies with a job.
Some courses are delivered live, while others can be followed at your own pace, with guidance provided as needed. Most courses have exam formats that do not require physical attendance on campus.
The time-intensive course format delivers each 5 ECTS module over two intensive weeks, with a self-study week in between and before the exam.
Language of instruction
Lectures are given in English when non-Nordic students are present.
