Svetlana Murzina worked with the ARCTOS network for her PhD with professors Stig Falk-Petersen, Jørgen Schou Christensen and the PhD-student Camilla Ottesen from the Faculty of Bioscience, Fisheries and

Economy at the University of Tromsø, Jørgen Berge from UNIS and Dr Haakon Hop from the Norwegian Polar Institute. She collected her samples on UoT, NPI and UNIS cruises around Svalbard and East Greenland, and the title of her PhD project was: “Role of lipids and their fatty acid constituents in biochemical adaptations of daubed shanny Leptoclinus maculatus from North-Western coastal waters of Spitsbergen”.

Svetlana is ARCTOS member since 2007, and defended her PhD thesis in February 2010 at the Petrozavodsk University.

The medal is granted by the Russian Academy of Science to the best young scientist and its research of the past year in the 19 basic subjects of research in the fields of natural, technical and humanitarian science. It was awarded to Dr. Murzina in general biology field in recognition of the extensive work accomplished by her during her PhD studies and now at the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS

The PhD project was also supported by: The Ice Edge programme Statoil (SAARP), University of Tromsø, University Centre in Svalbard, Norwegian Polar Institute, and the Scottish Association for Marine Science.

Co-operation with Russia

The ARCTOS research network has a long time commitment in their co-operation with Russian Research Institute and many Russian PhD - students are affiliated with the ARCTOS PhD-school and the Young Scientist Forum (http://www.arctosresearch.net/). The co-operation started in the late 80-ties with joint research project and expeditions to the Russian and Norwegian Arctic. The last two years, at least 6 projects from the Research Council of Norway (NFR and SIU) with Russian co-operation, have been awarded ARCTOS scientists ensuring a continued co-operation with Russia.

The co-operation including NFR projects as:

  1. Combined effects of Petroleum and the Environment in bivalves from the Norwegian-Russian Arctic” (COOPENOR):  Dr Jasmine Nahrgang (BFE-UoT)
  2. The Oceanography of Grønnfjorden and Billefjorden (GrønnBille): Professor Jørgen Berge (BFE-UoT) .
  3. Timing of ecological processes in Spitsbergen fjords  (SpitsEco): Dr Ole Jørgen Lønne (UNIS)
  4. Ecological processes during the polar night (MarineNight): Professor Jørgen Berge (BFE-UoT)
  5. Exchange of students and teaching cooperation between Norway and Russia: Professor Paul Wassmann (BFE-UoT)
  6. Young Scientist Forum Tromsø: Professor Stig Falk-Petersen (BFE-UoT)

Dr Murzina from the Russian Academy of Science in Petrozavodsk are co-leading SpitsEco with Dr Ole-Jørgen Lønne from UNIS.
