Forskningsaktivitetene ved instituttet konsentreres hovedsaklig om forskningsgruppene Polar Marine Geology and Geophysics, Solid Earth Science og Coastal and Terrestrial Geosciences.
Instituttet har flere store forsknings- og samarbeidsprosjekter finansiert blant annet fra Norges Forskningsråd, EU og flere norske oljeselskap. Våre hovedaktiviteter innen forskning foregår i det arktiske området, inkludert havområdene fra norskekysten til Svalbard og Øst-Grønland.
