đ Courses for incoming exchange students at UiT

If you're planning to join us as an exchange student, this page will help you explore the courses available to you.
We update our course catalogues twice a year:
-
15 September – for students starting in the spring semester (January–July)
-
15 March – for students starting in the autumn semester (August–December)
If you're planning to apply for a future semester and the new catalogue isn't out yet, feel free to check the previous semester’s catalogue. Course offerings usually remain quite similar, with only minor changes.
We’ve made it easy for you to plan your studies:
- Conflict-Free Course Packages: These are pre-designed combinations of courses that don’t overlap in the timetable. That means no scheduling conflicts and no need to switch courses after you're admitted.
- Course Timetables: Timetable is published after your arrival to Norway. Information about how to access the Timetable and change courses will be sent to you after the admission process is finalized in August (for commencement in the autumn semester) or December (for commencement in the spring semester). Link to the Timetable: TP: Timetable
- Exams & Grading: You’ll find all the practical info you need about when classes happen, how exams work, and how grades are given.
- Please see this website Exams at UiT | UiT
- Support for Students with Disabilities: UiT is committed to inclusive education. If you need accommodations, we’re here to help. Please see this website Studying with disability | UiT
Selecting your course modules is one of the most important steps in your exchange application. Your choices directly impact how quickly your application is processed. Students who skip or misunderstand this section often face delays — so please read carefully!
â Key guidelines for course selection
1. Choose courses related to your degree/subject field
- Most of your courses should be within the same subject area as your current degree at your home university.
- You may take courses from other departments if you meet the admission requirements.
â ïž Note: Some departments at UiT only accept students from their Erasmus+ partner institutions.
Important: Choosing courses across multiple departments or subject areas increases the risk of timetable clashes and delays in your application review.
2. Stick to One Campus
- You cannot combine on-site courses from different UiT campuses (cities) in the same semester.
Example: You can’t take one course in Tromsø and another in Narvik during the same term.
3. Check admission requirements
- Every course has specific prerequisites. You must meet these to be admitted.
â ïž UiT is not responsible if you're rejected from a course due to unmet requirements.
4. Plan your credit load
- A full semester = 30 ECTS credits.
- You may take fewer credits if your home university approves it.
- You cannot register for more than 60 ECTS per semester in your Course Application Form or Learning Agreement.
If your host department offers course packages, you must choose courses within those packages.
đ Visa requirement: If you need a visa to study in Norway (non-EU/EEA students), you must take at least 30 ECTS to qualify for a student visa.
5. Understand course levels
- UiT course codes start with three letters (e.g., BIO for Biology, PSY for Psychology, JUR for Law), followed by four digits.
- 1000 – 2000-level = Bachelor’s level.
- 3000 – 4000-level = Master’s level (you must have completed a bachelor’s degree or 180 ECTS).
â ïž Important note for GEO courses:
If you are a student from a university that has a direct exchange agreement with the Department of Geosciences at UiT, you may be eligible to take master's level GEO courses (coded 3000–4000), even if you have not yet completed a bachelor's degree or earned 180 ECTS credits.
6. Special Note for Engineering Students (Campus Narvik)
- Most courses in Narvik are at the master’s level, except for some in electrical engineering.
- Courses follow a block-based structure:
- Each semester is split into two terms (9 weeks each).
- A typical 5 ECTS course is taught over two weeks.
- Choose courses within the same subject area and course code to avoid timetable and exam conflicts.

Tip: After opening the course catalogue, make sure you’ve selected the correct semester (Autumn or Spring) and campus (Alta, Harstad, Narvik, or Tromsø) to see the relevant course offerings.

We ask you to choose one of the course packages listed below, as long as you meet the admission requirements and any prerequisites for the courses. The courses in each package are designed to fit together, so your timetable and exams won’t clash. If you pick courses outside these packages, there’s a good chance you’ll run into scheduling or exam conflicts. Before you decide, please take some time to read the course descriptions carefully.
