FAQ

On the UiT web, it says application date for international students is both 1 December and 1 March. What is the correct date? The programme Master of Fine Art has application date 1 March for all applicants.

Is the programme taught entirely in English? Yes. All the teaching and writing is in English.

I am a resident outside of the EU. Do I need a visa to enter Norway? Please read about formal admission requirements for international applicants here

Do I have to live in Tromsø during the study? Yes.

Will I get my own studio? The Master students will have shared studio together with other Master students. The studios are ca 35 square metre, with a nice view.  All students have access to a wide range of professionally equipped workshops and facilities.

How long is one semester? In Norway the autumn semester usually starts in the middle of August, and ends in the middle of December. The spring semester is from the beginning of January, and until mid June.

Can I apply for exchange during the study? You may apply for exchange in the second semester. Your studies abroad are integrated in your study programme, so you do not loose your study progression.

I cannot be there when the semester start. What should I do? If you cannot meet up on the start date, please send a written application to student administration as soon as possible (kunstakademiet@umak.uit.no ). Documentation of the reason for absence must accompany the application. The academy only approves absences when significant grounds for absence can be documented. Holidays are not considered significant grounds.

I need a place to live. What do I do next? For student housing, please check out Samskipnaden For private housing, take a look at Finn.no or Hybel.no It can be difficult to find housing in Tromsø, so we advise you to apply for housing as soon as possible.

What types of workshops, tools, and materials can I expect in the program?
You will be introduced to materials, workshops, and forms of expression within contemporary art. This may include working with wood, metal, ceramics, painting, 3D printing, sound, video, and other relevant techniques.

Do students have access to the workshops outside of teaching hours?
Yes, you can use the workshops until 11:00 PM. However, power to the larger machines in the wood workshop is turned off at 4:00 PM when staff leave. After completing all required health and safety (HSE) courses, you may use the workshops as much as you like. For safety reasons, there must always be at least two people present in the wood workshop at the same time.

What costs can I expect related to materials and courses?
This varies depending on what you choose to create, how much you produce, and which materials you use.

Is the teaching based on trial and error, or will I also learn techniques?
Both. You develop as an artist through your own practice and exploration, while also learning techniques that are necessary to further develop your work.

Do we study art history and relevant theory as a foundation for our artistic work?
Yes, the program includes teaching in art history and relevant theory that supports and contextualizes your artistic practice.

Are assignments assessed as pass/fail?
Yes, assessment is based on a pass/fail system.
