Course content
This in-depth study of Anglophone modernism combines a historical and cultural perspective with the close analysis (formal as well as thematic) of selected texts. We will pay attention to the definition of literary modernism and its features, and to its diversity of expression across the range of assigned texts. We will explore literature of the late 20th and early 21st centuries that address issues of loss, recovery, and transformation as triggered through profound external experience. These issues may be shaped by larger contexts such as gendered family histories, racial and ethnic displacements, war and its aftermath, illness, injury, or environmental change. Objectives of the course
