spring 2023
KJE-3301 Organic Chemistry 2 - 20 ECTS
Type of course
Theoretical and practical subject. The course is available as a singular or elective course independent of study program, also to exchange students. The course is offered on condition that a minimum number of students register for the course (minimum every second year).
This course will be given as a 2-semester course (autumn 2021-spring 2022, exam spring 2022).
Course content
The course is a continuation of KJE-1002, Organic Chemistry, and you will do your first steps into the exciting and challenging field of organic synthesis. Several topics known from KJE-1002 like enol chemistry will be treated in more detail. Additionally, a series of new and important types of reactions and their mechanisms will be introduced, e.g. radical reactions, reactions of carbenes, pericyclic reactions and peptide couplings. Important features in the planning of organic syntheses like chemo-, regio- and stereoselectivity and control by protection/deprotection strategies are discussed. In the lab, you will become familiar with general laboratory practice including safety, performance of a range of organic reactions and different separation techniques. Objectives of the course
The candidate will have acquired a solid and broad theoretical basis to understand organic chemistry. This means that the student
Knowledge
- knows a set of important organic transformations
- can recognize a standard set of reagents and understand their mode of action
- understands central aspects in the control of organic reactions
- understands the underlying principles for a set of separation techniques
Skills
- can draw the mechanism of important organic reactions
- can choose appropriate reagents for the selective transformation of a set of functional groups
- can determine the outcome of a reaction and identify possible side reactions
- can foresee some experimental requirements for organic transformations based on the mechanism and the reactivity of the reagents
- knows where find information about chemical hazards and how to treat chemicals
- can perform organic reactions under different conditions
- can isolate and purify organic compounds
Competence
- can recognize reagents and transformations described in the scientific literature
- has gained understanding of how to work and behave in an organic chemistry laboratory
