INF-3971 Master's Thesis in Health Technology - 30 ECTS

Type of course

The course is reserved for students on the Computer Sciences - master 5-year (programme), track Health Technology and is not available as a singular or elective course to any other category of students.To be assigned a master project the students must have passed all courses in their study plan and the required practical work experience must have been carried out and approved. The Programme Board may grant exemptions from the required practical work experience and up to 10 credits in missing courses that are less essential for the Master's thesis.

Course content

The content of the course will have interdisciplinary topics within the health domain, and have a strong link to the ongoing research activity both at the department's research groups and possibly from other academic environments at UiT as well as from relevant companies.

Objectives of the course

Knowledge - The student can ...

  • obtain an advanced level of knowledge in health technology;
  • develop and carry out a research project in health technology;
  • develop relevant and realistic research questions;
  • use theories that are relevant to their individual project;
  • use methods that are adequate for the individual project; and
  • discuss and report the results of the study in a scientific way in relation to existing literature in the field.

Skills - The student can ..

  • use scientific approaches and carry out advanced experiments or simulations;
  • evaluate and analyze real and/ or simulated data;
  • evaluate and analyze theories, methods and experiments that are published in literature;
  • work independently with practical and theoretical problem solutions, and
  • receive supervision and collaborate with advisor and members of research groups.

General expertise - The student can ...

  • display good communication skills in writing and presentation of scientific work, both for a general public and for specialists in the field;
  • follow the code of ethics and rules of conduct in scientific work; and
  • continue a career within research, production, development and technical professions related to their field of work.

Language of instruction and examination

The language of instruction is English or a Scandinavian language. The Master's thesis can be written in English or a Scandinavian language.

Teaching methods

Individual guidance and supervision according to agreement and of one semester duration. Maximum workload for the supervisor is 40 hours, you will receive supervision within these limits.

The exam includes a submission of a master's thesis within a set deadline. The deadline is set in connection with the approval of the supervision contract for the master thesis, but is normally June 1st and December 15th for submission in the spring and fall semester, respectively.

Re-sit examination

Only if a master's project is graded "F" (fail) may the project be resubmitted in revised form. A new deadline for submission will be stipulated. The deadline for resubmitting the project is 6 weeks from the point in time when the candidate was informed about the exam result. If the project receives a grade of "F" a second time the student can apply to the Department for the assignment of a new project.
