autumn 2011
STV-3052 Model United Nations - 10 ECTS
Theoretical.
This is considered an optional course that can contribute towards a master degree in political science, as well as other MA degrees (e.g. MPCT, indigenous studies, etc.).
Each year a "scenario" is chosen which will both be discussed during the lectures as well as feature as the theme for the annual Model UN (MUN) or roleplay. MUN is an increasingly popular development in new and innovative teaching strategies employed by universities and schools worldwide, and is supported by various international United Nations Associations, as well as by the United Nations itself. MUN provides students with the opportunity to experience international negotiation and diplomacy through an accurate simulation of the processes taking place in the Security Council. Students are assigned a country in the Security Council and work in groups to prepare the position of their country on the scenario. During the two-day MUN conference, students are tasked with negotiating a solution to the situation outlined in the scenario and will through this practice experience constraints and possibilities of collective international action.
In all, this course provides students with a unique learning experience and the possibility to understand as well as constructively criticise, an important as well as controversial international institution.
