ELE-3613 Electromagnetic analysis in engineering - 5 ECTS
Type of course
This course covers the fundamentals concepts of electromagnetic principles and their applications in electrical power engineering. The course can be taken as a single course. Students belonging to Master in Electrical Engineering are prioritized, while other students can sign up provided available laboratory and lecturer capacity.Course content
Electrostatics
- Electrostatic fields in high voltage technology.
- Electrostatic fields in insulating materials.
- The concept of resistance and capacitance.
- Electrostatic boundary-value problems.
Magnetostatics
- Magnetostatics fields in permanent magnets and current-currying wires.
- Magnetostatics fields in materials, hysteresis, and eddy currents.
- The concept of inductor and inductance.
- Magnetic energy, circuits, and forces.
Maxwell’s Equations
- Dynamic magnetic fields and electromotive force.
- The concept of electric transformers and motors.
- Maxwell' equations in differential and integration form.
- Time-harmonic fields.
Electromagnetic Wave Propagation
- Wave propagation in dielectric.
- Plane wave in good conductor.
- Skin effect and proximity effect.
- Power and the Poynting's theorem.
Transmission line theory
- Coaxial cables, a two-wire lines, and a parallel plate.
- Transmission line equations.
- Transient analysis of transmission lines.
- Lightning and voltage surges.
Objectives of the course
Knowledge
By the end of this course, students should build the knowledge on:
- Maxwell's equations and their implications in static and dynamic fields.
- The operational principles of transformers and inductors.
- The applications of Lorentz force in electric machines.
- Electromagnetic interference and the coupling mechanisms.
Skills:
- Analyze and solve various problems involving electromagnetic fields and their effects in electrical systems.
- Using computational tools and software for electromagnetic analysis.
- Identify electromagnetic phenomena related to practical problems.

- Apply theoretical knowledge of electromagnetism to practical scenarios in power engineering, enhancing system design and functionality.
