GEO-3151 Geo-seminar in energy and environment - 10 ECTS

Type of course

This course is available as a single course. This course is compulsory for students on the master's programme in energy, climate and environment who choose the study specialisation of either geothermal energy, fossile energy and carbon storage, seafloor environment or subseafloor environment and marine geohazards. The course is optional for students on the master's degree programme in geology.

Admission requirements

Bachelor's degree in geology, or a similar degree following a programme of study of at least three years duration, or similar education approved in accordance with the Norwegian Universities Act section 3-4. In addition, specialization in geology worth the equivalent of at least 80 ECTS credits is required. Normally, an average mark of C or better is required at the bachelor's degree level or other programme for basis of admission. Application code: 9371.

Course content

This research-oriented seminar includes in-depth discussions on selected contemporary topics in energy and environment, current technological developments and research directions, recent publications, etc. The course aims at fostering and developing scientific curiosity around the course theme and a critical reflection of representativeness, accuracy, reliability and importance of the data and results. The course consists of overview presentations, seminar presentations on selected topics given by the students, and a discussion about the topic prepared and led by the students. Thereby, the students will acquire skills in using scientific literature, being able to read, understand and discuss research by others, and learn how to present scientific results both in written form and orally.

Objectives of the course

The overall objective of this course is to provide a better understanding of contemporary topics in energy and environment with a major focus on geoscientific problems, e.g. sustainable energy production and consumption, unconventional and renewable energy sources, carbon capture and storage, or geoscientific methods in environmental assessment studies.

Lectures and seminars.

Assessment

Home assignment and an oral presentation of approximately 30 minutes duration. Grading scale: Pass/fail. There will not be arranged a re-sit exam for this course.
