Philosophy of Science and Ethics

Can be taken as a single course.

Who can apply for admission?

• PhD students at UiT who wish to take a course at the PhD level.

• PhD students from other universities and institutions.

• Applicants that has already achieved a master’s degree (five year master or three year bachelor degree + two year master degree), but isn’t a PhD student.

The seminar covers research processes and methods, philosophy of science, ethics and research fraud, research reports, the role of the supervisor, the history of the (European) universities and the tenure system, the PhD program, writing a dissertation, the research paper, making presentations at scientific conferences, the role of the referee, writing research grant applications, applying for research positions and having a scientific career. Participation in the lectures is mandatory. All materials-oral and written-must be written and/or presented in English.

The seminar gives and introduction to science and science communication. The main audience for this seminar is PhD students and junior researchers. The seminar covers research processes and methods, philosophy of science, ethics and research fraud, research reports, the role of the supervisor, the history of the (European) universities and the tenure system, the PhD program, writing a dissertation, the research paper, making presentations at scientific conferences, the role of the referee, writing research grant applications, applying for research positions and having a scientific career. Participation in the lectures is mandatory.

Finally, the PhD student will be introduced to the fundamentals of scientific writing and phd thesis.

• This course is aimed at PhD candidates from engineering and technology disciplines, but is also open to postdoc fellows if seats are available.
• PhD candidates from UiT and other universities may be admitted to the course. PhD candidates who are not registered at UiT must upload a document from their university stating that they are registered as PhD candidates.

If there are 5 applicants or fewer, the course responsible will evaluate whether the course will take place.

Knowledge:

After passing the course, the student is expected to be able to

• Demonstrate understanding of the forefront of knowledge within the field of science and ethics and masters the field's philosophy of science and ethics application of different methods.
• Evaluate the suitability and application of different methods connected to the philosophy of science and ethics, and processes in research and development projects.

Skills:

After passing the course, the student is expected to be able to

• Philosophize, think logical and consider different aspects concerning ethical questions related to own research activity.
• Write essays in ethics and in philosophy of science, write research papers, and make oral presentations of the research paper.

Habits of mind:

After passing the course, the student is expected to be able to

• Obtain the right ethical and professional integrity of the research results in own working field.

If you pass the examination in this course, you will get an reduction in credits (as stated below), if you previously have passed the following courses:

• PHDC1001 Philosophy of science and ethics 5 ects
• SVH-8005 Research Ethics 3 ects
• SVH-8008 Philosophy and Theory of Science (core version) 3 ects
• SVH-8009 Philosophy and Theory of Science (expanded version) 3 ects
