TEK-8001 Philosophy of Science and Ethics - 5 ECTS

Last dates for course registration and registration for examination are September 1 for the fall semester, and February 1 for the spring semester.

PhD students or holders of a Norwegian master´s degree of five years or 3+ 2 years (or equivalent) may be admitted (categories 3 and 4 above). PhD students must upload a document from their university stating that they are registered PhD students. This group of applicants does not have to prove English proficiency and are exempt from semester fee.

Holders of a Master´s degree must upload a Master´s Diploma with Diploma Supplement / English translation of the diploma. Applicants from listed countries must document proficiency in English. To find out if this applies to you see the following list:

Course content

The seminar covers research processes and methods, philosophy of science, ethics and research fraud, research reports, the role of the supervisor, the history of the (European) universities and the tenure system, the PhD program, writing a dissertation, the research paper, making presentations at scientific conferences, the role of the referee, writing research grant applications, applying for research positions and having a scientific career. Participation in the lectures is mandatory. All materials-oral and written-must be written and/or presented in English.

The seminar gives and introduction to science and science communication. The main audience for this seminar is PhD students and junior researchers. The seminar covers research processes and methods, philosophy of science, ethics and research fraud, research reports, the role of the supervisor, the history of the (European) universities and the tenure system, the PhD program, writing a dissertation, the research paper, making presentations at scientific conferences, the role of the referee, writing research grant applications, applying for research positions and having a scientific career. Participation in the lectures is mandatory.


Objectives of the course

Knowledge:

After passing the course, the student is expected to be able to

  • Demonstrate understanding of the forefront of knowledge within the field of science and ethics and masters the field's philosophy of science and ethics application of different methods.
  • Evaluate the suitability and application of different methods connected to the philosophy of science and ethics, and processes in research and development projects.

Skills:

After passing the course, the student is expected to be able to

  • Philosophize, think logical and consider different aspects concerning ethical questions related to own research activity.
  • Write essays in ethics and in philosophy of science, write research papers, and make oral presentations of the research paper.

Habits of mind:

After passing the course, the student is expected to be able to

  • Obtain the right ethical and professional integrity of the research results in own working field.

Teaching methods

Lectures/seminars. The lectures will consist of 5 full days with intensive lectures (up to 30 hours). Additionally, colloquium organized between the students are expected (Approx. 1-2 days of 4-8 hours).
