About the course

May be taken as a singular course.

The course will introduce students to the important environmental problems from normal industrial activities, including air pollution, water pollution, solid waste production and management and radiation pollution. In addition, the course will introduce the important global environmental problems from human activity, including global climate change, acid deposition, emission of environmental toxicants, extraction of natural resources. The students will learn how to perform an environmental impact assessment before starting a new activity or project. The latest technologies in air pollution control, wastewater treatment and solid waste management will be introduced also.

Finally, students will learn management of the risks from human activities. The environmental management systems in accordance with ISO 14001 will be introduced. Regulations, rules and indicators in sustainability reporting will be introduced at last.

  • have knowledge of the important environmental problems from human activities: air pollution, water pollution, solid waste production, and radiation pollution

  • is familiar with the technologies for monitoring, prevent and control of air, water and solid pollution
  • have knowledge in environmental impact assessment
  • is familiar with the environmental management systems
  • is familiar with rules and regulations for sustainability reporting

The student …

  • can describe the environmental problems and their causes under different context
  • can explain the current technologies for monitoring and control environmental pollution
  • can conduct an environmental impact assessment for a planned new activity or project
  • can put forward an environmental management system for the problems from a specific activity
  • can make environmental reports and develop an indicator system for sustainability reporting for the public and private sectors

General competence

The student …

  • understand the environmental problems from human activities, and can monitor, prevent and control the problems with the different technologies and regulations.
  • have general competence in environmental impact assessment.
  • have general competence in environmental management and sustainability reporting.

Credit reduction

If you pass the examination in this course, you will get an reduction in credits (as stated below), if you previously have passed the following courses:

  • SIK-2411 Environmental impact assessment and sustainability reporting (EIA) 10 ects

36 hours lectures and 12 hours exercises.

Group project assignment

Re-sit examination

Re-sit exam is granted to the students who have failed the last ordinary arranged exam and is granted only for the failed part of the examination.

Group project assignment:

Students having failed the group project assignment will be offered one opportunity to revise the project and submit it again in two weeks.

4 hours written exam:

A re-sit examination will be offered early in the following semester.

For a new regular exam attempt, it is not necessary to retake all parts of the exam.
