RUS-3041 Practical Russian 1 - 5 ECTS

Type of course

This course is intended for students in the Master's Programme in Russian and the Teacher Education Year 8-13 in Language and Social Studies Master's Programme.

This course may be taken as a single course by students who meet the admission requirements for the Master's Programme in Russian.


Admission requirements

A bachelor's degree (180 ECTS), or equivalent qualification, in Russian or Russian Studies (with specialization in Russian) with a minimum of 80 ECTS in the Russian coursework. An average grade equivalent to C or better in the Bachelor degree is required.

Course content

The course curriculum is a combination of rather advanced reading, speaking, listening, and writing activities, with a focus on practical grammar (approx. level C according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)). It includes elements of translation, essay writing and oral presentations. Foreign students who do not speak Norwegian can use English in translation tasks.

All courses undergo an evaluation each semester.


Objectives of the course

After completing the course the students have the following knowledge and abilities:

Knowledge

The students have:

  • knowledge about complex grammatical constructions in Russian
  • knowledge about the stylistic techniques that characterize various genres

Ability

The students are:

  • able to translate advanced texts into Russian and discuss current events in Russian
  • able to carry out oral presentations in Russian

Language of instruction and examination

Russian or English.

Teaching methods

Teaching will be in the form of weekly written assignments and conversation and reading exercises. The students will submit an assignment weekly for correction and feedback. Teaching consists of approximately 2 hours per week for 13 weeks.

This course is open for exchange students who fulfil the admission requirements (please see the "Admission requirements" section). The course should be taken as a part of a course package.

  • 8 written assignments must have been submitted by the given weekly deadline and must have received a pass.
  • An oral presentation of approx. 10 to15 minutes must have been completed with a pass during the semester.

The oral exam will be in Russian and will include the following tasks:

1) read a portion of a text from the syllabus;

2) answer to the questions about the content of this text;

3) have a conversation with the examiner based on the topic of this text.


Re-sit examination

Students who do not pass the previous ordinary examination can gain access to a re-sit examination.
