KJE-3316 Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry - 10 ECTS

Type of course

The course is available as a singular or elective course independent of study program.The course is offered on condition that a minimum number of students register for the course.

Admission requirements

The course is open to candidates with a bachelor degree in natural sciences or related pharmaceutical and medical sciences with a grade C or better in the Norwegian grading system.

It is recommended that students have basic knowledge in general chemistry or physics.

Course content

The course gives a general introduction into atomic theory and nuclear stability and radioactive decay modes. The course covers the fundamentals of radioactivity in nature and technology with special focus on the use of radioactivity in medicine. The course will give an introduction to radiopharmacology and the development of radioactive probes for imaging and therapy. In the practical part of the course a limited set of radiochemical techniques and handling of radioactive materials will be covered. Topics on radiation protection will also be covered throughout the course.

Knowledge

  • has advanced understanding of atomic models and nuclear stability
  • has in-depth understanding of different modes of radioactive decay, nuclear reactions, detection methods, the production of radionuclides and their applications in science and technology
  • can apply the knowledge to describe radioactivity in nature, radiation biology, radiopharmacology and radiopharmaceutical development for nuclear medicine
  • is familiar with applications in targeted radiotherapy and the concept of theranostics
  • has knowledge of cGMP conditions

Skills

  • can independently work on practical and theoretical problems in nuclear and radiochemistry
  • can analyse general nuclear reactions and discern between the different decay modes
  • can analyse and contrast advantages and disadvantages of the use of radionuclides in technology and medicine
  • can prepare, handle and evaluate open radioactive sources and radiotracers

General competence

  • can prepare and conduct lectures on topics in nuclear and radiochemistry
  • can communicate with specialists and the general public on topics in nuclear and radiochemistry
  • can analyse ethical issues in radiopharmaceutical development and its applications

Language of instruction and examination

The language of instruction is English. The examination text will be given in English, but answers may be given in English or Norwegian.

Teaching methods

Lectures (32 h), practical training (16 h) consisting of laboratory assignments and demonstrations, and seminars (10 h).

A project assignment with an oral presentation (10-15 min) is a work requirement.

The work requirements must be passed before the written exam is taken.
