Introduction to British Studies
About the course
This course is mandatory for students in the one-year study program in English and the bachelor program in English.
The course may be taken as a single course.
This course provides an introduction to British literature and culture. The syllabus ranges from the Renaissance (Shakespeare) to contemporary texts and cultural phenomena.
Lectures and seminars focus on the importance of literature and on how we understand fiction, poetry, drama, and a variety of texts in historical and sociocultural contexts, and in contemporary settings. Lectures, seminars and assignments develop critical thinking, verbal fluency and writing skills.
Admission requirements
Higher Education Entrance Qualification (generell studiekompetanse) or prior learning and work experience (realkompetanse).
A good command of oral and written English is recommended.

Objectives of the course
The students have the following learning outcome:
Knowledge
The student has:
- competence in imaginative literature and creative texts
- in-depth knowledge of texts on syllabus
- understanding of the interplay between literature and culture in British history
- insight into the main formal and thematic characteristics of literary genres
- comprehension of humanities
- knowledge of the history and society of the British Isles in different historical periods
Skills
- proficiency in close reading, interpretation of literature, and text analysis
- ability to write persuasively and effectively in academic English
- aptitude for critical thinking
- disposition for academic activity, scholarly discussion and theoretical discourse
Teaching methods
The course meets for four hours (two hours lecture and two hours discussion seminar) each week during 13 teaching weeks of the semester. Regular attendance in lectures and seminars is highly recommended.
Quality assurance
All courses will be evaluated once during the period of the study program. The board of the program decides which courses will be evaluated by students and teacher each year.
Language of instruction and examination
