INE-3601 Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing Systems - 5 ECTS

Type of course

The course can be taken as an single course.

Admission requirements

Bachelor degree in Engineering program in mechanical, electrical power, electronics, mechatronics, material science, industrial engineering, process engineering or other equivalent majors.

In addition, the following requirements must be met:

-minimum 25 credits in mathematics (equivalent to Mathematical Methods 1, 2 og 3), 5 credits in statistics and 7,5 ects i physics on a higher level is required.

Course content

Lecture week 1

  • Historical overview: expectations vs. potential of robotics
  • Application aspects of robots (Industrial robots, Cobots and Service robots)
  • Basic definitions, structure and types of robots (industrial)
  • Actuators, internal sensors, fundamental control concepts
  • Interfaces, external sensors
  • Programming approaches, integration into production systems

Lecture week 2

  • Kinematic modeling of robot arms: coordinate transformations, modeling conventions
  • Solving forward and inverse kinematic problems
  • Inverse kinematic solutions
  • Path interpolation, acceleration, deceleration
  • Agile manufacturing systems, conceptualisation of Industry 4.0-5.0 systems

Objectives of the course

Introduction to the industrial robot, the Cobot and some aspects of Service robots. Design of robots and their industrial applications. Technical, economic, and organizational issues related to the implementation of robotics in advanced flexible manufacturing systems.

  • Robot kinematics, coordinate frames and Jacobian matrices
  • Control systems for motion control

  • Design and programming of robots

  • Applying robots in advanced manufacturing systems

Language of instruction and examination

Teaching language: English

Examination language: English. Answers are also accepted in Norwegian.


Teaching methods

Lectures until noon and practical exercises in the afternoon. If distance learning is mandated by current circumstances, lectures will be held remotely, and instruction videos and datasets will be available for the exercises.

6 exercises are included in the course, 4 practical exercises (robot programming) in lecture week 1, and 2 theory exercises in lecture week 2.

2/3 of the exercises are mandatory. Exercises are performed individually or as project work by student teams. Students attending the practical exercises on-site can deliver exercise reports as a team. Students attending via distance learning are required to elaborate exercise reports individually.


More info about the oral exam

Oral examination: Based on a time schedule each candidate will have a 60 minute oral examination. Candidate no."1" will draw a set of question to be discussed during his/her examination. Candidate no. "2" will enter the examination immediately after Candidate no 1. and will have to answer the same questions as candidate no "1". Candidate no. "3" make a new draw of questions for him/her and the next candidate to arrive etc.

Re-sit examination

An oral re-sit exam will be arranged for this course.
