Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen/ Summary of the thesis:

This PhD project was focused on better understanding the protein NBR1. This protein is mainly involved in removing harmful or unnecessary substances from cells in a process called autophagy. Dysfunctional autophagy is involved in many diseases, and although it is known that NBR1 plays an important role in removing harmful substances from cells, many aspects of this autophagy process are still unknown.
Proteomics was one of the main methods used.  In this method, the experiment’s results are presented as a list of proteins that likely form a physical connection with NBR1. Junction plakoglobin (JUP) has been shown to connect to NBR1 in our proteomics study.  JUP is present in specialized structures called desmosomes, which glue neighboring cells together.
Microscope images show that NBR1 and JUP come together, and this could imply that desmosomes are broken down through the autophagy process. We also found that NBR1 moves into and out of the cell’s nucleus. One function of NBR1 in the nucleus is to get rid of toxic proteins. Another function of NBR1 in the nucleus is to help its partner protein, p62, to form functional elimination structures within the nucleus.
